The term 'Peranakan' refers to the people of mixed Chinese and Malaysian or Indonesian heritage. The Peranakans decorated their houses and furniture with these colourful tiles as they believed the floral motifs and vibrant colours would bring longevity, wealth and prosperity to the family. These colourful tiles gradually became a distinctive feature of this community and they are now referred to as Peranakan Tiles.

These tiles can be found on shophouses in some of Singapore's historic neighbourhoods, such as Keong Saik, Ann Siang Hill, Bukit Pasoh, Little India and Katong-Joo Chiat area.

Souvenir of Singapore Heritage

6cm (w) x 6cm (h)
